There was a cinder track at Darfield in the early 1890's. The most famous Darfield track rider at the time was Elijah Scott, a local man who was employed as a miner. Elijah rode the Darfield track and by the age if 21 was already winning races. In 1891 he beat Jack Stocks at the Boulevard ground, setting a new record for the ½ mile standing start event and that year he won 27 first places . In 1895 he was 25 mile champion of England at Fallowfield. In 1896 he was the Champion cyclist of England and represented the country abroad. He turned professional, moved to London and rode for Dunlop and was also a pacer for the Dunlop racing team. He was one of the first riders to use Dunlop pneumatic tyres.

He owned a cycle shop near Darfield, selling and repairing bicycles. He died in 1940, aged 71.
